As we begin the application process for the Arnold Kelly Scholarship for 2017, we would like to highlight Alejandra Saavedra, an OGSL alumna who was our first winner of the Arnold Kelly Scholarship in 2013. This past school year, she was accepted to the University of California, Riverside and has just finished up her first year! We are so proud of her accomplishments and wish her the best in her academic career and beyond!
“I played in OGSL for I believe 6/7 years starting in my 8U team called The Cute Kittens. Throughout my time on the league, I played from the 8U teams up until the 14U and then continued to play travel softball up until high school graduation. I went to elementary school at Monarch Academy and middle and high school at Lionel Wilson College Prep, both located in Oakland. I am currently finishing my first year at the University of California, Riverside where I am majoring in Liberal Studies and Public Policy to become an elementary school teacher. The Arnold Kelly Scholarship has helped me through my first year because college is definitely expensive and difficult when you don’t have the right kind of motivation. Knowing that my OGSL community gave me this award because they want me to further my education and support me through this transition means so much. I think the best OGSL memory I’ve created is making such close friends that I still keep in touch with and remembering the sleepovers we would have at each others houses and the ballet recitals we would dance in together. I’m currently playing intramural softball at my university and am an outfielder. Thank you to the Arnold Kelly Scholarship Foundation for giving me the opportunity to further my education and my love for softball.”
