Tryouts for the 14U Oakland Vipers Spring 2019 team will be held on Saturday, December 8, at CURT FLOOD FIELD (3300 Laguna Way, Oakland CA) from 9:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. The Spring 14U team is for girls who were 14 years of age or under as of December 31, 2018. We highly encourage kids who are 12U eligible but with significant travel ball experience to try out, as we expect this team to have 7th and 8th graders. (9th graders who are not playing High School softball in 2019 are also eligible, if 14 years of age as of 12/31/18.)
14U Spring travel softball is competitive, but also super fun. Head Coach Jonathan Klein has been a Vipers’ coach for the last 7-8 years (from 10U to 16U), and has been the Assistant Softball Coach at Piedmont High School for the last three years. Assistant Coach Maya Juergens-Ingle is herself an alumnus of Oakland’s fastpitch softball community (Skyline High), and has been a head and assistant coach in OGSL’s recreational softball program and its Vipers’ program for the last several years. Neither coach has a child on the team. We do expect to have additional coaches on the team.
Tryout participants will be asked to complete a tryout form in advance of the day, and to provide availability for approximately 5-6 tournaments during the Spring. The overall schedule will look like this:
January – once weekly conditioning practice, approx. 1 hour, on Saturdays;
February – once weekly practice, approx. 3 hours, on Saturdays, with some additional hitting clinic/practices on certain weekday evenings;
March – May – at least once weekday afternoon practice, plus a second weekend practice on weekends without tournaments, plus 5-6 tournaments ending mid-May.
Kids finishing Spring 14U will tryout again in the Spring for Summer Vipers. There are expected to be two 14U Summer teams, one coached by Jonathan Klein, the other by Maya Juergens-Ingle, so kids will learn valuable skills for the coordinated Vipers’ program. 12U eligible kids may also choose to tryout and return to 12U Vipers for Summer 2019, if they wish.
Vipers will learn advanced baserunning skills, get individualized hitting practice and instruction, and work on their overall defensive game, including advanced cuts and relays, backups, bunt defense, and individualized work on becoming a better player. Vipers’ teams performed well in 2018, winning tournaments at each of the 10U, 12U and 14U levels.
Players will be chosen based on a multitude of factors, including skill, energy, effort, attitude, availability, position, and desire to improve. All interested are highly encouraged to apply.
